LOWELL — A combined sewer overflow was recorded in Lowell on July 21, according to a notice posted through the regional alert system that keeps Merrimack Valley communities informed of discharges into the Merrimack River.

The notice surfaced this week via the shared News Flash network that several Merrimack Valley municipalities use to post public alerts, appearing under neighboring Andover's town feed rather than Lowell's own site. It confirmed only that a combined sewer overflow (CSO) event took place in Lowell on July 21; it did not include additional detail on the volume of the discharge, the specific outfall location, or the cause.

Lowell is one of several communities along the Merrimack River that participate in a state-mandated CSO public notification system, which is meant to alert residents — including anyone using the river for boating, fishing or other recreation — when heavy rainfall or capacity issues send untreated or partially treated wastewater into the waterway.
