CPC votes 7-1 to oppose repeal of its tax surcharge

Tyngsborough's Community Preservation Committee votes to return $130,000 and fight two surcharge-cutting ballot measures. The committee voted 5-0 to send $129,878.69 in unspent project funds back to the town, then voted 7-1 to formally oppose a citizen's petition repealing the CPC's tax surcharge and 6-2 to oppose a Select Board article cutting it from 3 percent to 1.5 percent. Staff presenter Colin told members the 1.5 percent option alone would cost the CPC roughly $699,000 a year while saving the average taxpayer $105.37.

Members also voted 7-1 to spend $2,500 on a presentation defending the program before Town Meeting on May 5. A separate $1.9 million plan to restore the Winslow Building's exterior stalled without a motion after member Edward Smith called it "financially irresponsible" amid the funding fight.
