Cable Advisory Committee · Meeting of May 20, 2026

Groton's Cable Advisory Committee approved about $5,050 in new equipment and technology spending while bracing for a federal captioning mandate that could cost $40,000 to $45,000 a year, more than double its $18,000 budget. Members Janet Vartanian Sheffield, John Macleod, Neil Colicchio and Russell Harris approved, by roll call, a $668 laptop for live captioning and a $3,900 Cablecast support renewal. The committee unanimously approved a $289.99 LED lighting kit and a $116.99 equipment cart.

A staff presenter said the committee's draft Charter Communications franchise renewal, sent April 24, drew only a brief April 28 acknowledgment and no further response. A member called past renewal talks "vicious." The committee budgeted $3,000 for up to three summer interns, with applications due June 15.
