BILLERICA — The Billerica Substance Abuse Prevention committee reorganized its leadership and approved funding for two recovery fundraisers at its August 12 meeting. Members reelected Dina Favreau as chair, elected Darlene Torrey vice chair, elected Eric Szymanski treasurer and reelected Dan Viola secretary. The committee approved a $1,000 silver sponsorship for the first annual Sergeant Ian Taylor Memorial Tournament on August 31 and $500 for the Justin's Voice sober-living fundraiser on September 14.

Detective Bobby Simmons reported eight overdose incidents in July, including one fatal overdose, and said "the methamphetamines are starting to come around a lot more than they ever have." Members also set aside $750 for a library Christmas tree donation and began planning a Wizard of Oz-themed drive-in movie for the group's 20th anniversary in October.
