The Somerville Biosafety Committee approved, 5-0, recombinant DNA permits with conditions for two new Flagship Pioneering startups moving into lab space at 101 South Street.
Other Committee · Meeting of October 22, 2026
SOMERVILLE — The Somerville Biosafety Committee approved, 5-0, recombinant DNA permits with conditions for two new Flagship Pioneering startups moving into lab space at 101 South Street. Flagship Labs 129 and Flagship Labs 130 are taking over space vacated by Flagship Labs 101, which shut down, and Flagship Labs 107, which merged with another firm. Presenters Barthi Senderesh and Rebecca Doblin described FL-129's small-molecule drug-binding research and FL-130's peptide-discovery platform, neither involving animal or pathogen work.
Committee member Bill Fisher flagged errors in the companies' emergency action plan, including a nonexistent in-house hazmat team and an incorrect incident-command designation; Flagship representative Donald Crooks said "Flagship doesn't have a hazmat team," and the committee required corrected language before permits are finalized. Voting to approve were Stephen Nutter, Francine Rogers, Deputy Chief Halligan, Bill Fisher and Colin Ziegler.
