Belmont Town Meeting approves $500,000 in one-time free cash payments tied to newly settled teacher contracts. School Committee Chair Meg Moriarty said the money, approved 195-26 with 10 abstentions, funds one-time bonuses under 19-month-old Belmont Educators Association agreements and "does not become part of the salary base." Opponents led by Capital Budget Committee veteran Ann Marie Mahoney warned "once the free cash door is opened, it is nearly impossible to close," while Warrant Committee member Fitzy Cowing questioned funding teachers but not the town's still-unsettled police and fire contracts. Town Meeting also approved a parallel $25,000 SEIU payment, 206-8, and passed the $171.67 million fiscal 2027 budget across 11 separate votes.

Warrant Committee Chair Paul Richter warned Belmont's reserves rank lowest among 17 peer towns and said "it is very likely" voters will face an operating override for fiscal 2029.
