Belmont schools chief flags 60-student bus wait list amid new labor deals. School Committee Chairperson Meg Moriarty told Belmont Journal that transportation demand has left 50 to 60 students, mostly middle and high schoolers, without bus seats, with per-student busing costing about $2,000 against a $500 family fee. The district finalized three-year contracts with all four educator unions, adding 15 minutes of daily instructional time in exchange for reduced teacher prep time.
Moriarty said state Sen. William Brownsberger and Rep. Dave Rogers backed a budget earmark for a one-year position building career-pathway partnerships with local businesses and Reading High School.
She called a successful negotiation one where "people walk away from the table feeling like they got something, but maybe they didn't get everything they wanted." Belmont High School ranked second in Massachusetts and 138th nationally in U.S. News & World Report's rankings.
