Ashland Library Launches Slate of New Fall Programs

ASHLAND — The Ashland Public Library launched a run of new programs this week, from toddler sensory play to a virtual discussion on gun control and the Second Amendment, while four town boards prepare to meet in the coming days.

SCHOOLS

Ashland Public Schools is counting down to the start of the academic year, with David Mindess Elementary School's first day of school set for Monday, Aug. 31. The district has also scheduled a preschool orientation for morning classes that same day, running from 9 to 10 a.m., according to the district calendar.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The library's new "Teacher Tales" series debuts Tuesday, Aug. 25, with sessions spotlighting David Mindess third grade teacher Ms. Gallinagh, followed by first grade teachers Ms. Tripp and Ms. Wolfram. The same day brings a virtual talk, "Celebrating 250: Revolutionary Sites & Remnants of Colonial New York City," tied to the run-up to the nation's 250th anniversary.

Elsewhere on the library calendar: Saturday Stories for families with young children runs Saturday, Aug. 22; the Monday Knit and Crochet Club and a virtual program on "Gun Control, the Second Amendment & School Shootings" both fall on Monday, Aug. 24; and Wednesday, Aug. 26 brings a virtual session on using AI in a job search along with Sensory Safari, a program for children ages 1 to 3 with a caregiver.

COMING UP

Ashland's civic calendar picks up next week. The Conservation Commission meets by Zoom on Monday, Aug. 24. The Zoning Board of Appeals holds a hybrid meeting Tuesday, Aug. 25. The Select Board meets in hybrid format Wednesday, Aug. 26, and the Planning Board follows with a hybrid session Thursday, Aug. 27. All four are tied to the town's ongoing preparations ahead of the Sept. 1 State Primary Election, which also has advanced ballot removal and depositing sessions scheduled Aug. 25 through Aug. 28.
