Public Arts and Culture Committee · Meeting of May 18, 2026

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Public Arts and Culture Committee unanimously adopted an updated public art policy covering temporary art events and performance contracts. The committee also voted to approve its April minutes and discussed a proposed restructuring that would dissolve project teams and its outreach committee in favor of individual project leads working directly with staff. Members cited underwhelming turnout at recent events, including a Brown House open house and a Community Sculpture Walk stop that drew roughly 15 to 20 people, as a reason to rethink outreach, with one member noting "I think if there's anything that we have done underwhelmingly well, it's that." Staff reported a 5 percent state budget increase for the arts and said state Representatives Steve Owens and John Lawn and state Senator Will Brownsberger received the committee's 2025 year-in-review.

A public art survey will go out to residents this summer, and the committee has set a date for a retreat later in the year.
