WATERTOWN — The Watertown Public Arts and Culture Committee postponed a final vote on its revised public art policy to give two new members time to review it. Public Arts and Culture Planner Liz Hufferin said the policy's adoption will trigger a long-planned public survey and must eventually go before the City Council. Members unanimously approved the committee's 2025 year in review and unanimously approved March meeting minutes.
The panel also discussed funding, noting the city gives the committee $40,000 a year on top of $32,000 in combined state and city Cultural Council money, plus a $70,000 Metropolitan Area Planning Council grant for Edible Watertown. One member called a presentation on reusing old municipal buildings for the arts "so depressing," citing asbestos, ADA compliance costs and thin revenue. The River of Light lantern festival was reset for January 16, 2027, and the next committee meeting was moved to May 18 and will be held virtually.
