Acton Raises West Nile Virus Risk to Moderate

Acton has moved its West Nile virus risk level up to moderate after a mosquito sample collected in town tested positive for the virus, town officials announced this weekend. The shift comes as Acton heads into Labor Day weekend and prompts new calls for residents to guard against mosquito bites.

TOWN HALL The Town of Acton announced that a mosquito sample collected locally has tested positive for West Nile virus, moving Acton's risk classification from low to moderate. Earlier in the week, officials had rated Acton's own risk as low even as several surrounding communities sat at moderate, a gap that has now closed.

Officials are urging residents to take standard precautions: using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active, and eliminating standing water around homes where mosquitoes can breed. The announcement did not report any additional human or animal cases connected to the positive sample.
