Wayland wastewater commission previews $2 million Route 20 request in five-year capital plan

Wastewater Management District Commission · Meeting of September 14, 2026

Wayland sells its last drops of sewer capacity as commission previews $2M Route 20 bond and $8M plant expansion placeholder. The Wastewater Management District Commission, chaired by Michael Gitten with member Darrin Bock, learned Monday that Wayland Commons purchased the district's remaining 880 gallons per day of flow for $21,780 to serve four new units, leaving the district effectively sold out. Department of Public Works Director Thomas Holder walked members through a draft five-year capital plan holding $2 million in fiscal 2028 for Route 20 low-pressure sewer work, $1.205 million in fiscal 2031 for HVAC and building improvements driven by a town-wide facility condition assessment, and an $8 million placeholder in fiscal 2032 for a possible plant expansion that could include treating Dudley Pond household wastewater.

Operations Manager Jared Cotton reported a July phosphorus "excursion" that pushed the plant slightly over its monthly limit; August cleared. Wastewater Administrator Sarah Pawluczonek reported fiscal 2026 closed with roughly $1.5 million in revenue against $936,000 in expenses and $1.14 million in certified retained earnings.
