WAYLAND — Wayland High School football answered last week's 55-30 loss to Bedford High School with a 23-20 win over Concord-Carlisle High School on Friday at Stadium Field, and the Warriors' boys soccer team kept rolling with two more victories as fall sports head into their final stretch.

HIGH SCHOOL

Football bounced back in a big way. After Bedford snapped the Warriors' unbeaten run a week earlier, Wayland's varsity squad answered with a 23-20 win over Concord-Carlisle on Friday at Stadium Field, a tight finish that kept the Warriors in the thick of tournament positioning. The freshman team got its own measure of revenge two days earlier, beating Concord-Carlisle 21-6 on the road Thursday. The junior varsity's rematch at Concord-Carlisle on Saturday was canceled.

Boys soccer had its best week in a month. The varsity squad beat Newton South High School 2-0 on the road Monday, then went to Norwell High School and won a tighter contest, 3-2, on Friday. The two wins give the Warriors a strong finish to October after their unbeaten start to the season ended in early October against Cambridge Rindge & Latin School. The junior varsity fell to Newton South on grass fields Monday without reporting a final score.

Girls soccer had a roller-coaster week. The varsity dropped a 0-4 decision to Newton South on Monday at Stadium Field, then lost a close one, 0-1, to Nashoba Regional on Thursday. The Warriors righted themselves Saturday, blanking Ashland High School 2-0 at Stadium Field to close the week on a high note. The junior varsity squad beat Maynard 3-0 on Tuesday and was scheduled to face Nashoba Regional's JV1 and Ashland later in the week.

Field hockey split its two games. The varsity team opened the week with a 3-0 win over Burlington High School on Tuesday at Marshall Simon's Middle School turf, but dropped a lopsided 0-5 decision to Weston High School on Wednesday at Stadium Field. The junior varsity tied Burlington 1-1 on Tuesday and was set to host Weston later in the week.

Volleyball turned in the week's cleanest performance. The varsity squad beat Weston 3-1 in sets Monday at the Field House, continuing a strong run heading toward the postseason. The junior varsity also hosted Weston on Monday.

LOOKING AHEAD

With the fall regular season winding down, MIAA state tournament seeding is expected to take shape in the coming days for Wayland's football, boys and girls soccer, field hockey and volleyball teams, several of which enter the final week with winning records and tournament hopes intact. Football's push for a strong tournament seed will be the storyline to watch after this week's bounce-back win, alongside boys soccer's bid to carry momentum from back-to-back victories into the postseason.
