Three Democrats spar on housing, Gaza in Medford forum
Mystic Valley Voters Forum .mp4 · Meeting of August 19, 2026
MEDFORD — Three Democrats vying for the 34th Middlesex State House seat found rare agreement on Gaza divestment and ICE data-sharing. Medford School Committee member Paul Rousseau, Somerville City Councilor Will Mbah and policy consultant Chris Oates all called Israel's Gaza campaign a genocide or close to it, though Oates deferred to the International Court of Justice, and all three pledged support for House divestment bills H.1264 and H.2984. Oates cited a Federal Reserve Bank of Boston report showing median wealth of $430,000 for white families versus $1,200 for Hispanic and Latino families regionally, and a Somerville affordable housing project requiring $600,000 to $700,000 per unit in subsidy.
All three said they opposed the state's 287(g) immigration data-sharing agreement and would not have voted for a House bill requiring ID verification for social media users. Mbah said, "The person closest to the pain should be closest to the power." No votes were taken; the primary is set for September 1.
