Sudbury Earth Removal Board approves Eversource permit for Maynard Substation soil pile

Sudbury Earth Removal Board unanimously grants Eversource a two-year permit to clear a substation soil pile. The board approved removal of roughly 420 cubic yards of stockpiled soil at 0 Powder Mill Road as part of Eversource's Maynard Substation Transformer Replacement Project, which will upgrade two transformers more than 50 years old. Project manager Jeff DeCicero said design will wrap by late 2026, with construction running spring 2027 through December 2028.

Eversource anticipates about 30 truckloads over two to three weeks, routed via Route 2, Route 117 and I-495. The chair pushed for a two-year term rather than the usual one-year window, saying otherwise "you're not even going to start construction by the time the permit is void." Board member Adam confirmed the Planning Board already approved the stormwater plan and that Sudbury's sign-off was the last town permit outstanding.
