Wayland consultant reports PFAS contamination at former DPW site far exceeds initial projections, now reaching the middle school property. A licensed site professional representing environmental firm CMG told residents at a July 30 online public meeting that 19 of 21 groundwater samples from the former Department of Public Works site at 195 Main Street exceeded the 20-nanogram-per-liter state drinking water standard, with the highest reading reaching 532 nanograms per liter — more than 26 times the limit. The consultant, identified as Ben, said the contamination area under DEP tracking number RTN 3-37750 now formally includes the Wayland Middle School at 201 Main Street and an adjacent vacant parcel at 207 Main Street, and that the outer boundary of the plume in groundwater remains unknown.

He said CMG will file a notice of delay with DEP before the current Phase 2 assessment deadline because insufficient data exist to complete the report. Attendee Marsha Berger, a licensed site professional, called the concentration levels "almost like an emergency" given proximity to Happy Hollow Wellfields, though the consultant noted the wellfields have shown no PFAS detections in finished supply water since 2022 following installation of a treatment system. A 30-day public comment period on a revised Phase 2 scope of work runs through August 30.
