Park Commission · Meeting of April 13, 2026
Groton's Park Commission approved a $36,545 fertilization contract and three summer field permits while gearing up for a public forum on a $4.2 million Community Preservation Act fields project. Commissioners picked Gatsby Grounds over a higher bid from DB Lawn Solutions after last year's missed weed-killer and pre-emergent treatments left fields crabgrass-damaged. The CPC-funded project, which goes before voters as Article 8 at the May 2 Town Meeting, would add parking, improve field access and permanently protect more than 20 acres as turtle habitat, funded partly by a $1 million federal grant with "no increase in taxes." Members also learned a contractor remediated the Alvin Sawyer Little League Field at no cost to the town, though it won't be playable this summer.
The board spent its final half-hour debating whether new field-use fees would unfairly "double dip" youth sports leagues that already pay for their own equipment and maintenance.
