Park Commission · Meeting of August 10, 2026

GROTON — The Groton Park Commission approved fall soccer and lacrosse permits at Cow Pond Brook fields while warning that a shortage of volunteer turtle monitors could jeopardize safe access to the baseball field. Chair Mary A. Jennings said the commission has operated under a risk "hanging over our heads" since 2009 and must staff turtle-monitoring shifts required by a Conservation Commission order restricting the access road through October 1. CPC Representative John "Jack" Petropoulos reported about 60 hours of monitoring logged so far with only three volunteers and no turtles sighted.

Members disagreed over whether the Community Preservation Committee had formally accepted an out-of-cycle application for a roughly $1.1 million Cow Pond Brook accessibility project, with Petropoulos saying, "I don't recall whether we voted on it or not." The commission voted 4-0 to approve a lacrosse permit for November 1 and voted to approve a soccer permit running September 5 through November 13.
