WATERTOWN — The Watertown Economic Development Committee debated a rewrite of the city's demolition delay ordinance but took no final vote. City Manager George Parikas presented a draft exempting city-owned buildings, affordable housing projects and the Watertown Square by-right zone from historic review, citing precedent from Somerville and Lowell ordinances he helped write. Historical Commission Chair Elizabeth Lucas countered with enforcement data showing the commission imposed delays in seven of 48 demolition applications decided, with one later lifted, since 2023, saying "there is no harm to leaving it the way it is." Residents Rita Colafella and Sam Gilardi submitted competing written comments, with Colafella calling parts of the draft "a backdoor veto on housing abundance" and Gilardi urging the age-exemption threshold rise from 50 to 100 years.
The committee voted to continue the discussion to a future meeting without setting a date.
