Panel backs heat pumps over Blanchard overhaul

Sustainability Committee · Meeting of July 22, 2026
Boxborough's Sustainability Committee voted 5-0 to prioritize town hall heat pumps, police department weatherization and partial Blanchard School LED lighting for its next Green Communities grant round, deferring a larger $500,000-plus Blanchard heat pump project. Chair Kate Davies said the sequencing reflected an aging town hall furnace that "needs a new furnace, like imminently." Fire station architects from Context Architecture and engineers from Fuss & O'Neill and GDD previewed early designs, estimating a 150-kilowatt rooftop solar array could cover 20 percent to 30 percent of the building's energy use. Member Barbara Salzman said public outreach on adopting the state's specialized stretch energy code found little interest, "we could not get anyone interested in this topic at all," prompting the committee to abandon a fall 2026 town meeting warrant article in favor of spring 2027.
The committee also voted unanimously to forward its draft Climate Action Plan to town boards for feedback.
