Medford tree ordinance advances to City Council for a vote

Medford energy panel tracks a tree ordinance, dark sky lighting and a rodenticide ban all in one meeting. The Energy and Environment Committee heard the City Council would vote as soon as Tuesday on a revised public tree ordinance drafted with city councilor Anna Callahan. Members said more than 50 Massachusetts municipalities restrict anticoagulant rodenticides, 15 have banned them outright, and Medford's Health Department director told the committee she supports a citywide ban "if the state doesn't pass it in a few months." A committee member called the state's data center moratorium "outrageous to think that it would all just be great" given the heat such facilities generate, citing Holyoke's outright ban as a model.
Trees Medford is offering free trees to high-heat neighborhoods through September 20, and a Miyawaki mini-forest planting near the Tufts pool is set for Saturday, aiming toward roughly 300 total trees. The Parks Commission meets Tuesday on contested Rex Pond dock and water-slide proposals.
