Medford Assessors Approve Round Two Tax Exemptions
Board Of Assessors · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Medford assessors uncover first-ever use of a veteran tax exemption clause tied to spousal home ownership. The Board of Assessors, with members John Wilkes and Steve Pompio and Assistant Assessor Jeremy Ferrer, approved a second round of personal exemptions covering veterans, surviving spouses, blind residents, and low-income seniors, plus boat and motor vehicle excise commitments. Staff disclosed the office's first application of state clause 22G, letting a disabled veteran claim a full $2,000 exemption despite his spouse holding the home's title.
One member argued occupancy-based limits on two-family veteran exemptions are unfair, saying "it's like a bank" when owners can't claim the full benefit. Ferrer previewed fiscal year 2027 valuations showing single-family values up roughly 3 percent and two- and three-family values up 6 to 7 percent, pending Department of Revenue certification.
