Littleton Reads 21 Names at Second Purple Heart Day Ceremony

Littleton holds its second annual Purple Heart Day ceremony, honoring 21 wounded and fallen veterans. Select Board member Mark Rambacher read a proclamation reaffirming Littleton as a "Purple Heart community" and designating August 7 as the town's annual Purple Heart Day, tracing the medal to the Badge of Military Merit created by General George Washington in 1782. Tracy DeLera sang the national anthem and Lou Sirocco delivered the invocation and benediction.

The ceremony named 21 recipients spanning World War II through Afghanistan, including Zachary D. Tellier, noted as killed in action, with recipients or family members invited forward to receive a rose. "Citizens of our community have been awarded the Purple Heart for their bodily sacrifice of being wounded in action while engaged in combat," Rambacher read.

The event closed with a flag raising, taps and thanks to LCTV, the American Legion, the VFW and the Friends of Littleton Veterans.
