Pepperell's Finance Committee cleared a $1.6 million fire truck and $347,000 in budget cuts ahead of a Nov. 7 Special Town Meeting. The three-member panel, re-electing John F. Ladik as chair, unanimously backed financing a replacement fire pumper at $207,000 a year for 10 years after the town's 34-year-old truck was repeatedly passed over for federal grants.
Members also approved $350,000 for Town Hall and police station roof repairs, leveraging a $6 million state renovation grant, and a $30,000 cemetery-lot appropriation for lawnmowers. Member Jeffrey Worth, describing himself as a longtime beekeeper, said "I spent $16,000 one year to replace all of my hives because a bear came in and destroyed them all" during debate over a right-to-farm bylaw change, which the committee declined to vote on because it carries no cost. No vote was taken on contested zoning articles either, though member Robin B.
Rose-Buxton flagged legal risk in undefined zoning terms.
