SOMERVILLE — The Somerville City Council voted unanimously to urge Gov. Maura Healey to end a state 287(g) agreement that hands incarcerated immigrants to ICE custody. Councilors Emily Hardt and Ben Ewen-Campen sponsored the resolution after Ward 7 attorney Christy LaSalle testified that "unless everyone has due process, nobody has due process." The council also backed Head Start funding after Community Action Agency of Somerville director David Gibbs cited Project 2025's call to "deregulate Head Start and eventually defund it," authorized $2,082,498 to buy two fire department vehicles, and voted 11-0 to approve a long-delayed lease with the Center for the Arts at the Armory.
Councilor Kristen Strezo read public testimony from a Winter Hill fourth grader describing broken bathroom fixtures students nicknamed "the blaster," prompting repair resolutions sent to committee.
