City schedules community meeting on fatal July 4 shooting of DPW worker
City Manager Yi-An Huang and Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui announced a community meeting this week to update residents on the investigation into the fatal shooting of a Cambridge Department of Public Works employee, who was shot and killed while off-duty near Broadway and Norfolk Street on July 4.
TOWN HALL
City Manager Yi-An Huang and Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui issued a statement expressing that the city is "heartbroken" over the death of the DPW employee, who was shot and killed in the area of Broadway and Norfolk Street on July 4, 2026, while off-duty, according to the city's News Flash. The investigation remains active, and city leaders indicated more information would be shared with residents in the coming days.
Separately, Huang and Siddiqui issued a joint statement on a U.S. Supreme Court ruling affecting Temporary Protected Status, saying the city "stands in solidarity" with its Haitian and Syrian communities as families face the loss of protections that have allowed them to live and work in Cambridge.
The city also announced that the Commonwealth has elevated Cambridge and the broader Northeast region from a Level 2 Significant Drought to a Level 3 Critical Drought status, the most serious tier before emergency measures. Additionally, the city's Historical Commission announced its annual Preservation Awards, recognizing projects that conserve Cambridge's historic built environment and support local designers and tradespeople. Residents should also note that the MBTA will close Red Line service at all Cambridge stations from July 21-30, replacing trains with shuttle buses.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The Cambridge Public Library's Valente Branch is now open Sundays from 1-5 p.m. through July and August, while the Main Library remains closed on Sundays until September. Library Director Maria McCauley previewed several July events in her weekly update, including an art reception and an Edible Wild Plants Walk.
Two family-friendly programs are highlighted this week: a Teen Crafternoon at the Main Library on Thursday, July 9, at 2 p.m., featuring button-making and paper bead bracelets, and Read to a Dog at the O'Neill Branch on Friday, July 10, at 3 p.m., offering children ages up to 14 a chance to read aloud to trained therapy dogs (registration required by calling the branch).
The city is also hosting its second annual Cambridge Porchfest this weekend, a free, walkable community music event where neighbors host musicians on porches, yards, and driveways. The city's "Screen on the Green" family movie nights also continue Wednesday evenings in July and August.
