Cemetery Panel Approves $850,000 Lot Expansion

Concord Cemetery Committee approves $850,000 Sleepy Hollow lot expansion, steps back from Black Heritage marker placement. The panel voted 5-0 for a final design adding 794 two-grave lots and extended, also 5-0, a restriction limiting lot sales to residents with immediate need. Interim Public Works Director Aaron McCloscoe said rising construction costs may require added funding.
Economic Vitality Manager Mimi Graney presented two proposed Black Heritage Trail markers for cemetery property, but Chair Beth Van Duser said the signs "do not conform to existing regulations" and recommended placement outside the gates instead; no vote was taken. Resident Nancy Purcellalee questioned the project's five-year sign term versus the three years the Historic Districts Commission approved. The committee also welcomed new member Barbara Kaiser and reported eight burials, 22 cremation interments and four newly obtained veterans' headstones this summer.
