Cambridge Prepares Citywide Response to Federal SNAP, MassHealth Changes

Cambridge is mobilizing a coordinated, citywide response to sweeping federal changes affecting SNAP and MassHealth benefits, even as families turned out for the city's annual Danehy Park Family Day on Friday.

The City of Cambridge said it is preparing a major, coordinated response to rapidly evolving federal changes affecting SNAP and MassHealth benefits, an effort that will involve multiple city departments as the rules shift this fall. The city did not detail the full scope of the plan in its latest News Flash post, but framed it as a priority response to protect residents who rely on the programs.

Elsewhere at City Hall, the city flagged weekend traffic impacts tied to the Central Square Night Market, with multiple temporary street closures affecting residents, businesses and visitors through the weekend of Sept. 19. The city is also seeking residents to fill vacancies on the Commission for Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board and the Planning Board, and the Department of Human Service Programs is hiring for part time and full time youth division positions this fall.

The city's Civic Assembly on Surveillance Technology also remains underway: about 15,000 randomly selected Cambridge households began receiving mailed invitations the week of Sept. 7 to serve on the city's first ever Civic Assembly, part of an initiative the city is calling "Your Voice, Your Cambridge."

Separately, the Cambridge Preschool Program, which provides free, high-quality preschool for 4-year-olds and some 3-year-olds, opens its application Oct. 1. Children turning three or four by Aug. 31, 2027 are eligible.

SCHOOLS

Cambridge Public Schools published its latest CPS Connect newsletter on Sept. 14 and announced a round of 158 Spring Street community forums for fall 2026. The district also posted an update on technology use in classrooms, described as prioritizing "connection and high-quality learning," and an update on collective bargaining negotiations between the Cambridge School Committee and the Cambridge Education Association.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The city invited families to Danehy Park on Sept. 19 for its annual Family Day, offering free entertainment, activities, rides, food and giveaways as a weekend outing for families across the city.

Cambridge Public Schools are closed and offices shut Monday, Sept. 21, for Yom Kippur. The Cambridge Preschool Program holds a family information session webinar Tuesday, Sept. 22. Wednesday, Sept. 23 brings an early release day for K-8 students, plus a virtual community meeting on the Gold Star Mothers Memorial Park remediation and improvements project, where the design team will share what it heard at June's Conceptual Design Open House.
