Public Health and Public Safety Committee · Meeting of July 2, 2026
Somerville's Public Health and Public Safety Committee heard that a $231,000 body-worn camera grant will lapse August 31 without council action. Public Safety For All Project Manager Hillman said the state confirmed "there will be no contract extension for the grant itself" unless a surveillance technology ordinance passes first. The committee also pressed Deputy Chief James Donovan on dumping and fights at the Broadway Salvation Army site, where police logged 75 directed patrols in June; Councilor Saeed called it "becoming a public health issue." Director Carroll reported January's point-in-time count found 31 unsheltered and 148 sheltered residents, while Director of Mobility Brad Ross said Summer Street speeding fell from 55 percent to 20 percent after its redesign.
Assistant Fire Chief Sean Tierney cited over $100,000 in May-June apparatus repairs.
